Active – Sobriety, Friendship and Peace is a European youth umbrella organization and sister organization of IOGT International, gathering 32 organizations from 22 different European countries. Founded in 1990, the organization engages more than 25 000 young people, united in promoting and practicing a lifestyle free from alcohol and other drugs and ensuring free, safe and inclusive environment for young people and children.
The Active’s vision is a democratic, diverse and peaceful world, where each individual can live up to their full potential. Alcohol and other drugs are recognized as direct hinders of young people’s potential and as factors influencing family life, children’s rights, social inclusion, youth unemployment, democracy, violence against women and girls, as well as creation of sustainable environments.
With organized interventions, the Active wants to raise the awareness about the questions of alcohol and other drugs-related harm among European youth and to foster the creation of evidence-based policies tackling alcohol-related harm on national and European level.
Since the organization aims to foster the creation of freer, safe and inclusive environments for young people, we are facilitating the capacity building of young people on various societal issues such as democracy, human rights, social inclusion, youth advocacy and social proactivity and participation Moreover, the Active is advocating for better social conditions and opportunities for young people to be engaged, healthy and proactive citizens in the future, contributing to equal, peaceful and just society.
Traditionally, every year, the Active together with member organization, is organizing Active Summer Camp, whereas every second year, summer camp is combined with the Active Congress where young people can practice democracy in real life. Each organization has its representatives based on the number of members, and actively participating in decision-making process in the Actives highest body, the Assembly itself.
For years, Active office, together with Nordgu, was hosting EVS volunteers. That was tremendous opportunity for development and growth of young people all over the Europe. Their passion and dedication shaped the Active and made this organization what it is today.
European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe and the European Commission -Erasmus + programme are the main donors of the Active, whereas significant support is coming through membership fees, as well as donations from our partners, members and other foundations.
