Three prejudices

One friend of mine was in the United States for summer holiday. He met there a man who wanted to come to Slovakia to visit him. American asked my friend how to get to his city from  the airport in Bratislava.
He wanted to know whether we have ways for cars here!!! He also started to explain what a microwave, computer etc is (my friend is a student of software engineering). This is how some people from far countries see the Europe.
I wanted to travel to south-east Asia, my mother was shocked and tried to do whatever to prevent me going there. She was so scared that "those strangers" will kidnap or assault me. Other friends who were there told me that it is actually one of the most safe parts of the world... This is how people from Europe see far countries.
I was talking with other friend about going to Albania. She told me that
it is dangerous there, she was talking about the war which was there (what
war???) - her mother told her about it.
I still wonder how scared people are of things which they simply don't
know. It actually prevents them from knowing new, great, different and
even more interesting people and countries. This raises their fear
even more and suddenly there are wars... just because people are too
scared to get to know the others...
I was curious so I checked criminality statistics. What a surprise:

United States 7.50
France  1.75
Slovakia 0.46
India  0.22
Albania  0.16

Numbers mean count of assaults per 1000 people (lower number means safer
country). Source: United Nations Survey on Crime Trends.

So, will that American guy go to Slovakia? Probably yes because he
already knows my friend.
Will I go to Asia? I don't know anybody there, that's why I want to go
there!
Will you go to Albania? ...

well... I managed at least to the Serbian border... it is as we said: once you create borders, it can be hard to overcome them...

brilliant entry. The more we go around, the better we understand with whom we live on this planet. Unfortunately I cannot come to Albania, but I hope to visit it nevertheless at some point. And there is still a whole world to see and experience:)

this blog makes me smile and think; I agree: there are no borders in this world, if we don't make them in our heads. Once we create them, it can have desastrous effects - I agree, too. I will go to Albania. But I don't know if I will go to USA or Asia. Sometimes it means the world to shake hands with your neighbour next doors...

Hah, i know this thing, every time i tell people i'm going by interrail and hitchhiking to albania, they are so convinced that it is not safe, and that albania is a dangerous country. I say: Bollocks!

Hi, I am Erjon from Albania. I agree with what Matus said. Albania is a very safe country and statistics are true. Last year Albania was visited from 2 million tourists and not even one of them was harmed or had any trouble. this needs no comment. Than, Albania is member of high level organizations like NATO etc. and as you know a country must be a safe country to gain membership in these organizations. Only by visiting Albania you will find out how friendly and hospitable Albanians are. you are always welcome.
