At the moment there is a very interesting debate going on in my home-town Lund in the south of Sweden. All the fuss is about the recent decision of closing the alcohol monopol during the last of April, Walpurgis Night. That is in fact because people tend to drink a lot of alcohol during that day. The politicians of Lund were inspired by the city Uppsala not too far from Stockholm, which also closes their monopol during this day.
The interesting thing is why people get so engaged by this discussion. Everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Me too, of course… I think it is a good idea to limit the possibilities of buying alcohol, and I think it is good to close it as the Walpurgis Nights of Uppsala have gotten less wild since they made this change. If also Lund can get less violent thanks to this decision I am positive. It seems to me that alcohol makes people so violent and that the saying “drink with responsibility” does not longer exist.
The people who are against say that everyone will go to Germany and Denmark (Lund is located in the south of Sweden close to Denmark and Germany) now in order to buy alcohol, or there will be more illegal selling. I don’t agree on those arguments since the monopol is open all the other days except for this one. Maybe they are just irritated by the fact that the politicians for once actually are doing something good with the aim of getting the alcohol consumption down!? I hope that more Swedish municipalities will follow Uppsala and Lund on this!
