It's all relative

I saw a show about Tanzania lately on TV, where people turned to the local witch for 3 reasons mainly: to learn about the whereabouts of stolen goods, get help for stomach problems and cow sicknesses. As 2 out of these 3 problems have been bothering me lately as well – only that I turn to the police or my own medicine men whom I believe to be more powerful – I started to wonder about the small everyday things we do to make our lives better.
For example a tester for eye cream I found between papers lately, with a chemical ingredients list longer than the Mendeleev table of elements. There are great pages online where you can check the safety of cosmetics, and it has turned out that the same cream contains many ingredients, that are known to cause biochemical or cellular level changes, reproductive toxicity and allergies – just to name a few side-effects. And it’s a well-known, well-advertised company. People buy this cream and really believe that’s gonna make them look better and miraculously reduce aging. Creepy. And the fact makes the attitude a usual European has towards the before mentioned “witches” even more ironic.
Or another well-known example, drinking wine and believing that it’s good for our heart – even if we are 25 and aren’t about to face any heart problems for the next 20 years for sure. And even if all the scientists in the world tell us, there is no amount of alcohol that could be counted as harmless. Or another example - how lighting a roll with 50 carcinogenic substances and breathing through it many times a day will make us thinner, sexy and rebellious.
Of course I’m not living in the illusion of being somehow different or seeing through it all. I also have my miraculous creams and my own tricks to create a certain image of me. My own voodoo, so to say.
We all do. And that’s fine. As long as we don’t slaughter innocent beings by full moon, or harm our families and friends, who have to live with the damage we do. With being loved, with creating ties and relationships comes a certain responsibility.

We all have our own voodoo. Never really thought of it before, but it's true.
